Description

6 John Street is a villa built around 1820, featuring later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey building with a basement and has three bays. To the left, there is a later single-storey extension, and to the right, a single-storey piended block. A modern annex is linked to the rear. The exterior is made of squared and coursed sandstone with droved dressings, a polished ashlar porch, and a canted window. The addition has stugged ashlar with droved dressings, while the northeast elevation is of rubble. The building features a base course, a first-floor cill course, and a cornice, along with a cornice on the addition, a blocking course, and flush quoining.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a slightly projecting bay in the center. The later square-plan porch is pilastered and corniced, with a basket-arched doorpiece. The entrance has a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above, flanked by narrow round-arched slit windows. There is a round-arched window on each return elevation at the ground level and a window at the basement. The first-floor window is centrally located, with an advanced cornice and blocking course, along with a raised tablet in the center. To the left, there is a basement-level window in the bay, a tripartite window at the ground floor with new mullions, and a window at the first floor. The bay to the right has a later canted window at the ground level, with a piended roof rising from the basement. A single-storey addition from the later 19th century is located to the outer left, featuring a canted, piended window in the center. To the outer right, there is a single-storey wall joining the property with 8 John Street, made of squared rubble with a window.

The southwest elevation has three bays of regularly-placed windows with shutters on the addition. The northwest (rear) elevation was not seen in 1994.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 4-pane, 8-pane, and plate glass designs. The roof is piended and covered with slate, including the addition to the left. There is a harled wallhead stack on the northeast elevation and a rendered and coped truncated wallhead on the southwest.

The interior was not seen in 1994.

The boundary wall is painted squared render with coping. Some original cast-iron railings are present in front of the basement, along with modern railings on the boundary wall and steps.
