4 And 4A Elcho Terrace, Portobello, Edinburgh

3 Elcho Terrace in Portobello, Edinburgh, dates from around 1860 and features later additions and alterations. This is a two-storey, twelve-bay classical terrace, with the first three houses identical and the fourth a mirror image. The building is constructed of droved ashlar with polished dressings, while the rear and side elevations are made of squared rubble with droved dressings. Architectural details include a base course, a dividing band course, panelled aprons beneath the first-floor windows, a cornice, a blocking course, and flush quoining.

The southwest (principal) elevation is asymmetrical, with each section comprising three bays. The central bay features a consoled and corniced panelled door, with a plate glass fanlight and a window above on the first floor. There is a window in each floor of the left bay, while the right bay contains tripartite windows at both the ground and first floors. Notably, No 4 has an ogeed pelmet above its fanlight and stop-chamfered arrises.

On the northwest elevation, there is a later external staircase added in 1958-1959 leading to a door on the first floor, which was formerly a window, and this door has a horse-shoe fanlight above it.

The southeast elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a modern doorpiece at ground level with a round-arched, border-glazed window above it on the first floor, and a modern window to the right.

The northeast elevation is not fully visible as of 1994 but is asymmetrical and includes single-storey extensions to each house.

The building has six-pane timber sash and case windows and a piended slate roof. There are two truncated wallhead stacks with large octagonal cans on each side elevation, and ashlar mutual stacks at the front and rear with octagonal cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1994. The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping and were formerly topped with railings, some of which have been replaced.
