Description

5 Elcho Terrace is a later 19th-century classical house located on a corner site in Portobello, Edinburgh. It is a two-storey, three-bay building with a square plan, featuring stugged ashlar and droved ashlar dressings. The house has a porch made of channelled polished ashlar, along with a base course, band course, eaves course, mutulated cornice, and quoining. The windows have stop-chamfered arrises.

The southwest elevation, facing Elcho Terrace, is asymmetrical and includes a later porch at the center. The porch features a four-panelled door with a segmental-arched plate glass fanlight, all set within a moulded architrave. There are raised corner pilasters, a cornice, and a blocking course with cast-iron railing above. A double glazed door with a plate glass fanlight is located on the first floor, along with windows in the ground and first floors of the flanking bays.

On the southeast elevation, facing John Street, the left bay projects and features a canted, piend-roofed window. There is a one-storey extension with attic space that is recessed to the outer right. The northwest elevation is symmetrical and has a round-arched, border-glazed staircase window at the center.

The building has a mix of 8-pane, 4-pane, and plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof is piended slate, with shouldered ashlar wallhead stacks on all elevations except for John Street. The extension has a mansard slate roof with a platform at the apex and a stack at the center of the northeast side.

The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls are made of squared and snecked rubble with coping, which were formerly topped with railings that are now partly replaced.
