7 John Street, Portobello, Edinburgh

7 John Street in Portobello, Edinburgh, is an early 19th-century house that has undergone later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay, symmetrical classical building with a rectangular plan and a two-storey extension at the rear. The exterior features painted droved ashlar with polished ashlar dressings, painted harl on the southwest elevation to the left, unpainted harl on the right and northeast elevation, and rubble with painted droved dressings at the rear. The building has a base course, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course.

The northwest (principal) elevation showcases a square-planned, Doric-columned porch at the center, complete with a dentilled cornice and pilasters at the re-entrant angle. It has a four-panelled door with a plate glass fanlight above, along with windows on the first floor and in each flanking bay; there are possibly later louvered shutters.

The southeast elevation features a three-bay, two-storey extension. The ground floor is not fully visible, but some later alterations are indicated by the masonry. The first-floor windows have been extended downwards in each bay, and there is a delicate cast-iron balcony in the right bay.

The house has 12-paned timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with apex stacks, and a piended slate roof on the extension, with harled-brick wallhead stacks on the sides.

The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls are rendered with ashlar coping and feature original cast-iron railings.
