Description

9 and 9A John Street is an early 19th-century classical villa in Portobello, Edinburgh, with later 19th-century additions and alterations. The building is two stories high and has a rectangular plan with three bays. It is constructed of painted droved ashlar with polished dressings, featuring a base course, a cill course at the first floor, an eaves course, a dentilled cornice, and raised quoins.

The principal elevation faces northwest and has a central projecting bay with raised quoins that extend through the eaves. This bay features a raised panelled tablet at the blocking course. The entrance is a corniced Roman Doric pilastered doorpiece with a fluted lintel and flanking rosettes, leading to a nine-panelled door, a plate glass semi-circular fanlight, and an arched window in a recess above. There are architraved windows on each floor, with a bay window to the right. To the left, a later full-height canted window has a moulded string course and panelled angles, while a round-arched window is located at the centre of the canted dormer. A later squared rubble wall, painted and with coping, connects to the adjacent property at 7 John Street, providing access to the rear portion of the house.

The southeast (rear) elevation has undergone some alterations and features two modern dormers. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The slate roof has coped skews and apex stacks, with a piended and platformed canted window in the left bay, adorned with cast-iron railing, and slate-hung sides to the canted dormer.

The interior has not been seen since 1994. The boundary wall is made of stugged ashlar with ashlar copings and was formerly topped with cast-iron railings. There is a fine cast-iron post box located to the left of the gate.
