Description
Boroughfield is a villa located at 32 Colinton Road in Edinburgh, built around 1865-1870. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan structure featuring a large modern extension. The front is made of cream sandstone with an ashlar finish, while the rear and sides are constructed from squared and snecked stugged rubble, accented with droved ashlar dressings. Architectural details include a base course, a moulded string course above the ground floor, a first-floor cill course, and a deep dentilled eaves cornice. The round-arched balustraded parapet has moulded panels at the corners and center, and the quoins are channelled with moulded panels above the ground floor and fluted at the eaves level. The side elevations have corniced and scroll-flanked shouldered wallhead stacks.
On the southeast (front) elevation, there is a central entrance porch supported by paired squared Roman Doric columns, complete with a frieze and cornice. Above the porch are carved diamond panels and balusters. The entrance features a two-leaf panelled door leading to a tiled vestibule. The first floor has an architraved window, a full-height canted window in the left bay (1-3-1), and another full-height canted window in the right bay (1-2-1). A large two-storey flat-roofed modern addition is located to the left.
The northwest (rear) elevation includes a single-storey canted window to the right (a later addition), two single windows above, a modern window to the left, and a timber mullioned bipartite window in the center bay at the first floor, along with a wallhead stack to the left. The northeast elevation features a central tall bipartite stair window with ornamental astragals at the first floor, a small timber mullioned bipartite window with ornamental astragals at the ground floor below, and a secondary door flanked by a small window and a single window at ground floor to the right. Above, there is a single window flanked by small windows at the first floor, with a wallhead stack to the left.
The southwest elevation has a modern addition and a wallhead stack on the main block. The windows throughout are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with Scottish slate, featuring a piend and platform design with lead flashings, and there are three wallhead stacks.
The boundary wall surrounding the property consists of a high rubble wall at the rear and sides, while the front features a recessed ashlar wall with saddleback coping and obelisk gatepiers that have rounded arrises and a stugged panel on the front face.
