Description
The Abbot's House, located at 10 Links Place in Leith, Edinburgh, dates from around 1800 with later additions. This two-storey, three-bay villa features a symmetrical design, with single-storey pavilions on either side and a large rectangular projection at the rear. The exterior is made of cream sandstone, with tooled ashlar and polished dressings on the front, while the rear and sides are constructed from coursed and squared rubble. A band course runs above the basement, and there is an eaves cornice with a blocking course that bears a slender tablet.
On the southwest (front) elevation, there is a centrally located doorway that is architraved, consoled, and corniced, accessed by steps with an ashlar balustrade. Above this doorway is a single window on the first floor. The outer bays feature two-storey canted windows at both the basement and first floor levels, which are later additions, along with single windows on the first floor above. The roof has three modern Velux rooflights.
The northeast (rear) elevation includes a large rectangular single-storey projection at the center, topped with a leaded coved roof and a gabled skylight. There is a tripartite window on the end wall, though the outer lights are now closed by shutters. Two canted barred dormers with half-pitched roofs are present on the roof, along with a skylight at the center.
The southeast (Poplar Lane) elevation features a gabled design with a corniced ashlar apex stack, single windows, and two small windows at the gablehead. The northwest elevation is also gabled with corniced ashlar apex stacks and includes single windows, with a small window to the left of the gablehead.
The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with black slate and includes metal flashings, along with two apex stacks. The skews are coped with ashlar.
The interior was not seen in 1993. The boundary wall and railings consist of a low rendered wall at the front with ashlar coping and plain railings, while taller rubble walls are present on the sides.
