Description
37 King Street in Perth is a Classical villa built around 1835. This two-storey building features a three-by-three bay design and is situated on a prominent corner site. The exterior is made of painted tooled, squared, and coursed rubble with smooth margins, while the rear has a concrete harl finish. It includes an eaves course and cornice, with a blocking course above the central bay and raised cills.
The principal elevation faces west and has a slightly advanced central bay. It features a nine-panel timber entrance door topped by a fanlight with a lozenge-shaped glazing pattern. The doorpiece is pilastered and corniced, with a balcony above that has a decorative metal railing. The outer bays are adorned with shallow Doric pilasters, and there are later external slatted timber shutters.
On the south elevation, there are blind window openings in the left bay. The building predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roof is piended, covered with grey slates. The wallhead is coped, and there are ridge stacks.
Inside, as seen in 2009, the original room plan is largely intact. The hallway features a part-glazed timber door with sidelights, and there is a curved staircase with decorative iron balusters and a timber handrail. Some simple decorative plasterwork cornicing can also be found.
The property is enclosed by boundary walls to the south, west, and north. The low, coped rubble walls to the south and east are topped with later metal railings, while a taller, coped rubble wall stands to the north.
