Description
This building, known as the Surgery, located at 28 James Street and 72 Victoria Street in Perth, dates from the mid-19th century. It is a two-storey and attic structure featuring a seven-bay by five-bay Classical corner terrace design. The exterior is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with contrasting painted margins, while the rear is finished in rubble. Notable architectural details include raised cills and an eaves cornice.
On the northern elevation facing Victoria Street, there are five bays. The right side has three bays with a central doorpiece that is consoled and corniced, featuring a four-panel timber entrance door, a rectangular fanlight, and three-panel sidelights. There is also a further corniced door surround on the far left, along with three dormers.
The western elevation facing James Street consists of seven bays. The left side, designated as No 28, has three bays with a central pilastered doorpiece. There are blind windows at both the ground and upper storeys on the left. A single dormer is present here. The right side, comprising Nos 30 and 32, has four bays with a central double pilastered and corniced doorpiece that includes a pair of four-panel timber entrance doors.
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and ridge stacks.
Inside, some areas observed in 2009 include curved stairs with decorative iron balusters and timber handrails, along with decorative plasterwork ceiling roses and simple cornicing.
