Description

The buildings at 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 Perth Road in Dundee date from around 1855 and were remodeled by Edward and Robertson in 1873. They were later extended to the west by A Hutchinson in 1882. These commercial buildings are constructed from coursed rubble and are arranged in three blocks from east to west.

The eastern block is three stories high with an attic, and a five-story rear due to the slope of the land. It has four bays and features a ground floor with a chamfered and corniced shopfront. The upper floors have single windows in the center and bipartite windows on the sides, all with segmental heads. The first floor has cornices, and the second floor has a cill course. The block is topped with a parapet, segmental-headed dormers, and has a gable-end and central wallhead stack. The simple rear has a five-story, four-bay structure with a ground floor arched loading bay and a fourth-floor iron cantilevered balcony, although some glazing has been altered. There are four dormers and a central wallhead stack.

The central block is four stories high with a seven-story rear and six bays. Its detailing is similar to the eastern block but includes a full attic storey above the cornice and blocking course. The left bay is marked by pilaster strips, with a ground floor segmental-arched entrance. The upper floors feature bipartite windows, and the third floor has consoled pilasters that support a sculptured pediment. There are two wallhead stacks.

The western block is four stories high with an attic and a six-story rear, designed by Hutchinson in 1882. It has tall ground floor loading doors and corniced segmental-headed center windows. The outer bays feature shallow canted oriels that are three stories high, with similarly detailed dormers. This block also has a cornice, parapet, and a central wallhead stack, along with a return bay to the west. The rear is four bays wide with tall arched loading doors, and the first floor has been altered. The second and fourth bays of the second floor have tripartite windows, and there are three-story canted oriels above. The block features canted dormers and a large octagonal cupola with a wrought-iron finial.

The roofs are slate, and the windows are mainly sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern.
