Old Technical Institute, University Of Dundee, 60 Small's Wynd, Dundee

This is a two-storey, attic and basement former Technical Institute, dating from 1886 and designed by John Murray Robertson. It is located at 60 Small’s Wynd, Dundee. The building is rectangular in plan and constructed of stugged rubble to the sides and rear, with pink ashlar dressings and a grey slate platform roof. A base course, moulded cill course to the principal floor, decorative panels depicting commerce and various trades, and a moulded eaves course feature prominently. The windows are timber sash and case, with two panes to the bottom sashes and four- and six-pane upper sashes; single windows are found to the side elevation, while the rear features bipartite and tripartite windows, and the front elevation incorporates groupings of four and five windows.

The front (west) elevation is dominated by a slightly advanced, pedimented bay in the centre. A large, tripartite, keystoned depressed-arch doorpiece rises from the basement to the ground floor, featuring partially glazed, two-leaf timber, pedimented doors with sidelights, approached by steps with coped flanks. Multi-pane glazing is set above and at flanking arches (partially replaced with plate glass on the right side). Diaper work is present at the spandrels, with sculpted panels above and pilaster strips to the angles, finished with unusual anthemion caps. A five-light window is positioned above on the first floor, with moulded mullions. Sculpted decoration adorns the pediment. Recessed bays flank the central bay, incorporating a four-light window to the basement, ground, and first floors. Sculpted panels are found above the ground floor windows, and sunburst motifs are incorporated into shouldered ashlar panels above the first floor. Several rooflights are present.

The north elevation displays four windows to the basement, ground, and first floors. The south elevation features a bipartite window on both the ground and first floors. The rear elevation is partially obscured by a former college hall, and incorporates various windows at all floors, along with rooflights, and a large, out-of-character dormer.

The interior includes a central staircase with wrought-iron corkscrew balusters, some original joinery such as boarded dados and lecture theatre pews, and lattice-work steel struts to the attic roof.

The former college hall is a single-storey, rectangular-plan structure with snecked rubble walls, ashlar dressings, and a grey slate mansard roof with continuous glazing to the upper pitches, as well as three ridge ventilators. It has a door and two windows on the front elevation, with a tripartite segmental window above. Ashlar-coped skews are visible, and the interior is a single space with lattice-work steel roof struts.

A low, coped boundary wall features replacement iron railings to Small's Wynd, along with three pyramidal-capped gatepiers.
