Description

The Old Institute on Atholl Road in Pitlochry was designed by J Murray Robertson of Dundee and dates back to 1895. This two-storey building with a basement features a rectangular plan and has been converted into office premises. It is characterized by ogee-capped corner towers and is constructed from squared and coursed rubble with droved ashlar dressings, along with band courses. The main entrance on the northeast elevation has steps leading up to a panelled timber door, flanked by narrow lights and a depressed arch fanlight, all of which are glazed. Above the door is a carved panel displaying the monogram 'RBW' and the date '1895'. The central bay has a single window on the first floor, while the flanking bays each have tripartite windows to the right and single windows to the left. The outer bays feature round towers, each with two windows on each floor.

On the southeast elevation, there are four windows on the ground floor and two additional windows grouped toward the center on the first floor. The wallhead stacks are prominent on either side of the center. The northwest elevation has a blank raised basement with a window in the center bay at ground level, a small opening immediately to the right, and a bipartite window to the outer right. The first floor has windows in the center and outer right bays.

The southwest elevation is asymmetrical and includes a variety of elements, such as a door with a plate glass fanlight located in a bay to the left of center at the basement level. The building primarily features a 10-pane glazing pattern, with plate glass glazing on the ground northeast elevation, all set in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped and shouldered ashlar wallhead stacks.

Inside, there is a timber dog-leg staircase with carved finials and plain cornices. An ancillary building, which was formerly a hall, is a single-storey, three-bay structure with a piend roof. It has a small round, conical-capped ridge ventilator and is connected to the Institute by a lower piend-roofed bay. The ancillary building has three timber sash and case windows on the southeast and two on the southwest, all featuring a 4-pane glazing pattern.
