59 Small's Wynd, Dundee

The Fleming Gymnasium, designed by John Donald Mills and Godfrey D B Shepherd and completed in 1905, is a single-storey rectangular building that features a two-storey, two-bay fives courts section. The exterior is constructed of stugged and snecked squared ashlar with polished dressings, topped by a grey slate piended roof. The fives courts are located on the left side, with a ground floor door and two first-floor windows. The gymnasium section on the right has seven tall round-headed keystoned windows with non-traditional glazing, recessed at the five central bays which are defined by ashlar pilasters without capitals. The outer bays feature two-leaf glazed and panelled doors with moulded doorcases and a dentiled cornice. Overdoor panels are inscribed with 'University College Dundee' on the left and 'The Fleming Gymnasium: AD 1905' on the right. The elevation facing Small's Wynd has three bays, with the centre bay recessed, showcasing a tripartite window on the ground floor and a gabled dormerhead breaking through the eaves at the first floor. There is also a tripartite window on the ground floor to the right and a bipartite window to the left on the first floor. The interior has been altered and adapted for new uses.

The Boiler House and Jute Shed, designed by Charles Edward and Thomas Saunders Robertson in 1872, possibly incorporating an earlier building, is made of snecked bull-faced rubble with cream ashlar dressings and a grey slate roof. The right side features a two-storey gable with a base course, ashlar quoins, ashlar-coped skews, a full-length ridge ventilator, a segmental doorway, and three ground floor windows, along with a segmental window on the first floor. There is a modern single-storey addition to the right. To the left, there is a lower three-bay single-storey and attic wing with an ashlar base course and parapet, channelled quoin strips, and a segmental cart entrance that has been blocked and converted into a doorway at the slightly advanced bay on the left. This wing has three windows across two bays on the right and three modern rooflights. The far left wing is constructed of random rubble with a grey slate piended roof, featuring three doorways of varying sizes and an eight-light continuous rooflight. The interior of this building has also been altered and adapted for new uses.
