Description

The Ewing Building at the University of Dundee, designed by Reginald Fairlie and completed in 1953, is a two-storey structure with a basement and penthouse additions. It has a rectangular plan and features cream ashlar on the front, with coursed stone on the sides and rear. The building has a flat roof on two levels, with later additions. It includes multi-pane metal windows, cill and lintel courses on the first floor of the rear elevation, coped wallheads, and cast-iron rainwater goods on the rear.

The front elevation is composed of nine bays, separated by eight giant pilasters in antis, with blank bays on either side. The central entrance features two-leaf panelled doors with splayed reveals and a fanlight adorned with a wrought-iron grille. This entrance is accessed by a segmental flight of steps with rounded, coped flanks and decorative lanterns on the flanking pilasters. Above the entrance is a dated lintel with a coat of arms, and there are six-pane windows in the basement at four recessed bays on either side. The outer bays on the first floor display three sculpted coats of arms.

On the left return elevation, there is a fire escape leading to the penthouse addition, with windows on either side. The right return elevation facing Small's Lane is asymmetrical, featuring a base course with five windows on the ground floor to the left and seven windows on the first floor.

The rear elevation facing Small's Wynd has a bay that advances to the centre, featuring a full-height stair window in a recessed panel. There are nine bays to the left with windows on all floors, including a door in the fourth bay from the left on the ground floor, and eight bays to the right with windows on all floors, including two-leaf doors at the centre of the ground floor. The roof has penthouse additions and dish aerials.

The boundary walls consist of low coped ashlar walls along Small's Wynd, complemented by plain steel railings. There are also coped ashlar quadrants with plain steel railings along Small's Lane, two square-section open-work steel gatepiers with lantern bases (though the lanterns have been removed), and paired plain steel gates along with a footgate.
