Description

The Carnegie Building, part of the Geddes Quadrangle at the University of Dundee, was designed by Rowand Anderson and Paul and built in 1909. It is a two-storey and attic building with a basement on a sloping ground to the south, and it was originally a physics laboratory constructed in the Scottish Renaissance style.

The building’s eastern elevation and southern gable are faced with cream-coloured ashlar stone at ground floor level, with cream dressings, and red ashlar at first floor level. The north gable and western elevation combine bull-faced snecked rubble with cream ashlar dressings. The roof is slated, with a platform. Architectural details include a base course, a band course at first floor level, a moulded wallhead with corbelled eaves, and rusticated quoins. The windows are predominantly square-headed sash and case windows with twelve panes; the ground floor front windows have multi-pane, timber top-hopper frames with segmental heads. There are five pedimented dormers to the front and two flat-roofed dormers to the rear.

A decorative ventilator, set on a balustraded platform at roof level, features an aedicula, louvres, a finialled cupola. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present, including some moulded hoppers.

The east (front) elevation is asymmetrical. A bay is slightly advanced to the centre right, and a doorpiece is advanced to the right, featuring two-leaf panelled doors and a mannered curvilinear pediment. A window to the left incorporates a nameplate panel, and a keystoned and corniced Venetian window is at first floor level, surmounted by a segmental pediment bearing a coat of arms. Four bays are recessed to the right, with windows at ground and first floor, and three bays are recessed to the left, similarly with windows on both floors (one ground floor window has been cut down to create a door). An extended, mostly plain bay is situated on the far left, featuring two oculi at ground floor level and a panel at first floor inscribed 'The Carnegie Laboratory of Physics 1909'.

The south gable has three segmental-arched doors to the basement. The central bay is slightly advanced, and a Venetian window at first floor level incorporates bull’s eye windows. A pediment above displays a coat of arms. The north gable has a single window to the first floor and one dormer.

The west elevation features windows to ground and first floors, one of which has an acid tray at the cill of the preparation room window. A modern addition is situated centrally.

Inside, the two-storey entrance hall has a three-bay arcade supported by Ionic columns, and a scale and platt staircase. The preparation room retains its original glazed cupboards and a gallery.
