Description
The Peters Building, located in Geddes Quadrangle at the University of Dundee, was designed by John Donald Mills and Godfrey D B Shepherd and completed in 1909. This two-storey and attic structure features a rectangular plan and three bays, showcasing classical detailing typical of its time. The ground floor is constructed of cream ashlar with red ashlar on the first floor, while the sides and rear are made of bull-faced snecked pink rubble. The building is topped with a grey slate platform roof, and there is a later brick addition at the rear.
Architectural highlights include a base course, a band course at the first floor, modillioned eaves, and an octagonal ventilator with round-headed louvred openings topped by a finialled ogival roof. The windows are predominantly single and tripartite multi-pane sash and case types, with segmental-headed multi-pane windows on the south and east elevations at the ground floor. However, there are modern box dormers that are not in keeping with the building’s character.
On the south (front) elevation, there is a two-leaf multi-pane glazed door located in a slightly advanced central bay, framed by a moulded and corniced doorcase. This entrance is accessed by a flight of steps with decorative wrought-iron railings. Above the door, a cartouche panel is inscribed with "The Peters Electrical Engineering Laboratory 1909." The first floor features a tripartite window set in a recessed panel, topped by an open segmental pediment with a date panel. The ground floor has single windows on the left and right, with tripartite windows above.
The west elevation has a single window at the ground floor center flanked by bipartite windows, and three windows on the first floor, including a fire escape to the left and a dormer. The east elevation features three windows on the left, a bipartite window to the right, a tripartite window on the first floor, and a large cross-window to the right, along with a dormer. The north elevation is obscured by the later addition. The interior of the building has not been seen.
