Description

The Harris Building, part of the Geddes Quadrangle at the University of Dundee, was designed by Rowand Anderson and Paul and built in 1913. It is a two-storey building with an attic, and a four-storey tower to the rear, originally serving as an engineering laboratory. The building is rectangular in plan and built in the Scottish Renaissance style.

The exterior is constructed from cream-coloured ashlar stone at ground floor level, red ashlar stone on the first floor and tower, with snecked bull-faced pink rubble to the rear. Cream-coloured ashlar dressings are used throughout, topped with a slate platform roof and an ogival roof with finials to the tower. Architectural details include a base course, a band course at the first floor on the front elevation, a moulded wallhead course, corbelled eaves, and rusticated quoins. The front elevation features architraved windows with cill panels and cornices to the first floor, mostly containing 12-pane sash and case windows. Ground floor windows are segmental, while the rear has various multi-pane windows. The upper stage of the tower has architraved windows with segmental pediments. Cast-iron rainwater goods with moulded hoppers are also present.

The south (front) elevation has four bays recessed to the centre, with windows to ground and first floors. To the right is a two-bay pavilion with a decorative doorpiece featuring a two-leaf panelled door, a moulded doorcase, a richly decorated coat of arms, and paired windows to the left. A similar pavilion is on the left side. The west elevation has a door to the right, with three windows to the left and two small and two large windows to the first floor. The east elevation is largely hidden by adjacent buildings, with three windows to the first floor and another window to a recessed bay to the right.

The rear elevation showcases the tower, slightly advanced to the centre, with windows on the ground and first floors, paired windows on the second floor, and a window on each elevation at the top of the second stage. Recessed bays contain doors and windows, while a curvilinear window breaks through the wallhead to the right. Further bays include a segmental door and a tripartite window with a pediment breaking through the wallhead.

The interior consists of a pilastered entrance hall with a beamed ceiling and a scale and platt staircase. The remainder of the building has been largely modernised.
