Description
The Nurses' Home at Princess Margaret Rose Hospital in Edinburgh was designed by Sir Reginald Fairlie around 1935. This is a two and three-storey, 14-bay residential building situated on a terraced site facing south, featuring a classical design. The exterior is harled with a painted base course, sills, and a second-floor sill course, and it has a cream sandstone ashlar door surround.
On the south elevation, there are six three-storey bays in the center, which include a round-arched doorway at the ground level, framed by an architrave with a keystone and impost blocks. The doorway has a panelled door and a decorative radial fanlight above it. Flanking the doorway are windows in two bays that do not align with the regular fenestration of the bays above and in the outer bays of the block. The windows decrease in size with each floor. There are two-storey bays on either side, with broad, advanced single bay outer pavilions and three-bay links, all regularly fenestrated with smaller windows on the first floor.
The north elevation features a single-storey projection at the center left, with stair windows in the flanking bays to the left and a fire escape to the outer right of the center block. The remaining bays have regular fenestration, with three windows on each floor of the outer pavilions.
On the east elevation, there is a fire escape to the right of the center, with small windows flanking the stair. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey pantiles, which have been replaced with brown concrete pantiles on the rear of the center block and the front of the east bays. Stacks are located in the re-entrant angles formed with the pavilions.
The interior was not inspected in 1998.
