Description

A house of 1934 designed by Rowand Anderson and Paul, situated at 22 Frogston Road West, Edinburgh. The building is a two-storey rectangular block with a catslide roof extending north over a single-storey and attic entrance range, which projects slightly to the east. A garage is attached to the east via a short section of wall containing a gateway. The design incorporates influences from Hollywood and Spanish architecture, characterised by white rendered walls, pantile roofs, and round-arched entrances. Concrete dressings are utilized throughout, and the exterior features hoodmoulds constructed from pantiles set horizontally above the windows. Deep projecting eaves are also present.

The north (entrance) elevation features a round-arched entrance with a deep, rock-faced sandstone architrave, positioned to the right of the projecting entrance section with its catslide roof. A two-leaf panelled timber door opens at the entrance. To the left, three windows are present, each with a pantile hoodmould. Above these, three dormer windows with catslide roofs alternate with the ground-floor windows, and a taller window on the right serves as a stairwell. An outer right bay is set back, featuring a single window on each floor, also with a pantile hoodmould. A short section of wall with pantile coping and a round-arched gateway with a boarded timber door adjoins the ground floor to the outer left, with the garage adjoining this section.

The south elevation includes brick steps leading to a large opening with glazed patio doors and a pantile hoodmould in the ground floor of both outer bays of the main block; the outer right bay is slightly advanced with a short section of catslide roof. Two narrower windows, each with central UPVC mullions and pantile hoodmoulds, are positioned between these large openings. Three regularly-spaced dormer windows with catslide roofs are present on the first floor; two to the left are wide with 3-light panes and UPVC mullions, while the one on the right is taller and narrower and opens out as a door onto a cantilevered concrete balcony with a steel balustrade. A narrow bay is set back to the right, featuring a single ground floor window with a pantile hoodmould. A short section of wall with pantile coping and a round-arched gateway with a boarded timber door is set back to the right, with the garage projecting to its right.

The west elevation displays a pair of windows with pantile hoodmoulds on the first floor. A single, narrow window with a pantile hoodmould is found on the ground floor of the catslide roof section, which is set back to the left, with a narrow attic window (likely inserted) above to the right.

The east elevation presents a single, wide three-light window with UPVC mullions and a pantile hoodmould centrally on each floor. The entrance features a boarded timber door, centrally located within the gabled projecting section to the right, accompanied by a small window (possibly inserted) to the right and another in the gable above.

The garage adjoins the east end of the short section of wall with pantile coping. It features a large entrance with a pantile hoodmould and a late 20th-century aluminium door on the north gable end, along with two regularly-spaced windows on the west elevation. A late 20th-century timber-framed greenhouse has been added to the south gable end.

Replacement UPVC windows are present throughout the house, with the exception of the garage, which retains fixed six-pane timber frames. The roof is covered with grey pantiles, complemented by grey ridge tiles, with two harled ridge stacks incorporating concrete coping and round cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are fitted. Internally, the original layout and hardwood doors and doorcases remain largely intact, although the original fireplaces have been removed.
