Description
The site includes entrance gates and a boundary wall associated with the Waterworks on Buckstone Terrace, Edinburgh, dating from the early 20th century when the site was extended. A filter house and pump house were added in 1910, designed by J and A Leslie and Reid, engineers, and are built in the Edwardian Baroque style. All structures are of coursed, slightly rock-faced sandstone with contrasting red sandstone ashlar dressings.
The Filter House is a single-storey, rectangular building with a six-bay symmetrical plan. It features pedimented gables and a central oculi. A deep red sandstone plinth is present, as is a wide corniced eaves course. The windows are architraved with bracketed projecting cills, and there are channelled quoins. The west elevation has a central entrance with a moulded architraved surround, a keystone, and a moulded pediment topped with a central, louvred oculus featuring splayed voussoirs. A panelled timber door is set within the entrance. Flanking windows feature keystones. The east elevation mirrors the west, with a round-arched entrance, a boarded timber door, and a similar oculi feature. The north and south elevations have six regularly spaced windows, mostly 12-pane fixed timber frame windows with single opening lights. The roof is grey slate, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present. The interior was not inspected in 1997.
The Hillend Pump House is a single-storey, rectangular building with a simplified Edwardian Baroque design. It incorporates a deep moulded eaves cornice, V-jointed quoins, and V-jointed surrounds to all openings. The north (entrance) elevation features a panelled timber door with a two-pane overlight to the right and a single window to the left. The south and west elevations each have a single window. The east elevation has a boarded timber door set in the centre, with three-pane timber windows featuring top hoppers. The roof is flat and asphalted, and cast iron rainwater goods are present.
The Entrance Gates and Boundary Wall are a low stone wall topped with replacement railings. The wall includes two pairs of gate piers and terminates with a pier at each end. The north pier is located approximately 30 feet north of the main entrance, and the south pier is immediately west of the pump house. The sandstone wall is snecked with ashlar coping and piers, which are square in plan, with projecting bases, band courses, and pyramid caps. The wall curves eastward at the main entrance, and a second entrance is located to the west of the filter house.
