Description

Balerno Lodge and Walled Garden, located at 36 Johnsburn Road in Balerno, dates from the earlier to mid 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay symmetrical block constructed of stugged squared and snecked sandstone, featuring ashlar margins and dressings, a base course, eaves moulding, quoins, and raised cills.

The northeast entrance elevation has three bays arranged symmetrically, with the central bay slightly recessed. It features a moulded surround with an ashlar lintel above a broad panelled and glazed door, which is topped by a rectangular, three-pane bordered fanlight and a window above. The flanking bays have canted sandstone windows at ground level with chamfered reveals and lead roofs, along with windows above.

On the southeast elevation, there is a two-bay outer right block with symmetrically disposed windows. The entrance bay is recessed at the centre, leading to a single-storey piend-roofed block at the ground, which now has a modern rubble extension and a door to the right. To the outer left, there is a two-storey block with lean-to storage at ground level and a window at the first floor. The windows include two-pane sash and case in the canted bays, four-pane sash and case for the remainder of the house, and a twelve-pane sash and case in the outer left block on the southeast elevation. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a piended design with lead flashings, along with tall, corniced, square, grouped ridge stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1994.

The walled garden, located to the southwest of the house, is a rectangular-plan space enclosed by a high rubble wall with harl pointing and slab coping, which is heavily covered in ivy on the eastern wall. It has a round-arched opening with a modern wrought-iron gate.

The boundary wall and gatepiers consist of rubble quadrant walls with slab coping, and ashlar gatepiers topped with a cornice and pyramidal caps. The outer piers are similar, and there are wrought iron gates. The boundary wall running along Johnsburn Road is made of rubble with harl-pointing and features semicircular coping.
