Description
This building is a lodge located on Larch Grove, Johnsburn Road in Balerno, Edinburgh, dating from the early 20th century, specifically after 1913. It is a single-storey, three-bay cottage designed in the Scottish Arts and Crafts style, featuring a rear jamb that forms an L-plan. The exterior is finished in white-painted harl with concrete cills and crowstepped gables.
On the southeast elevation, there are three asymmetrical bays. The broad gable on the outer right features a sandstone canted window. To the left, there is a door with a swept-roof porch and a half-glazed door, while the outer left bay has a bipartite window with a masonry mullion.
The northwest elevation consists of a three-bay single-storey block on the right, with a door located at the outer right, accessible by plain masonry steps. This door is boarded and has a three-pane fanlight above it. To the left, there are two windows, with the inner left window being a replacement. The jamb is situated on falling ground, with a garage below it; the garage has a boarded door on the outer left and a single window off-centre to the right on the principal floor.
On the southwest elevation, there is a gable with a window located on the outer left. The building features 12-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead flashings, and an apex stack at the southwest gable, along with a wallhead stack on the northeast elevation.
The gatepiers and boundary wall consist of stugged rubble gatepiers topped with a cornice and pyramidal cap. The curving quadrant walls are made of stugged sandstone and have semicircular coping.
