Description
West Lodge, Dalhousie Castle is a single-storey, three-bay former lodge built in the late 19th century. It is constructed from stugged squared and snecked pink sandstone, featuring polished dressings. The building has a base course, long and short dressings with chamfered reveals, long and short stop-chamfered quoins, and crowstepped gables.
The northeast elevation, which serves as the entrance, is asymmetrical. It has a boarded timber door in the center with a letterbox fanlight above. To the left, there is a bipartite window, and to the right, a gabled bay features a canted three-light window in the center.
The northwest elevation is blank. The southwest elevation is also asymmetrical and consists of two bays. It has a gabled bay on the left with a window in the center, which is flanked on the left by a small timber lean-to greenhouse. There is a 20th-century harled addition that projects from the bay on the right.
The southeast elevation is nearly symmetrical with a gabled single bay. It features a single-pane window in the center, which has an advanced cill and a replacement lintel, as well as the base of a corbelled stack at the apex of the gable.
The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead ridges. There is a shouldered, coped sandstone wallhead stack with circular cans, and the rainwater goods are made of plastic and cast iron.
The interior was not seen in 1998. Curved cast-iron railings are located to the north of the lodge.
