Description

The Stables and Dovecot at Dalhousie Court, Cockpen Road, Bonnyrigg, were designed by John Dennis of Newcastle in 1880. This structure features an octagonal dovecot alongside a two-storey stable block with a rectangular plan. It is constructed of red brick with brick dressings, showcasing round-arched window and door openings.

On the northeast elevation, the design is nearly symmetrical, featuring a broad doorway with an iron lintel and a boarded timber door. To the left of the doorway is a blind window, and between the ground and first floors, there are three blind oculi recesses. The first floor has a large opening in the centre, flanked by two blind windows, and the gablehead includes blind oculi.

The northwest elevation has a single bipartite window at the centre of the ground floor, with the dovecot located to the outer left. The southwest elevation was not visible during the 1998 inspection. The southeast elevation is asymmetrical and consists of three bays, with recessed bays in the centre and right. There is a bipartite window to the right on the ground floor and a single window in each bay of the first floor. Additionally, there is an irregular tripartite window in the lean-to bay on the left at ground level. The octagonal dovecot sits on a square plinth in the first floor of the left bay, featuring panelled, infilled flightholes and a corbelled parapet.

Most windows are predominantly boarded up. The roof is covered in grey slate and has a decorative terracotta ridge. The interior was not seen during the 1998 inspection.
