Description

Crofts House is an earlier to mid-19th century house, with subsequent additions and alterations. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay Jacobean gabled house, with a lower, single-storey and single-storey-with-attic, 2-bay wing attached to the right, and a single-storey wing at the rear. The front facade is of coursed and tooled cream sandstone, while the sides and rear are of harl-pointed rubble, with some areas whitewashed. The detailing includes weathered and droved sandstone quoins, long and short surrounds to chamfered openings, sandstone mullions, and chamfered cills. A separate, single-storey, rectangular garage block, possibly a former byre, is located at the rear.

The south-east (entrance) elevation features a 3-bay house to the left, with steps leading to a modern timber door centred at ground level and an opaque fanlight above. Sandstone brackets support a corniced canopy over the doorway. A bipartite window is located at ground level in the bay to the right, and a bipartite window breaks the eaves above, with a blind, pointed-arched arrowslit centered in the shaped gablehead. A full-height gabled bay projects to the outer left, featuring a tripartite window at ground level, a bipartite window at the first floor, and an armorial panel dated '18??' centered in the shaped gablehead. To the right is a lower range with a bipartite window to the left, and a slightly advanced gabled bay to the outer right, topped with a ball finial, and featuring bipartite windows on both floors.

The north-east (side) elevation has a timber panelled door centred in a single-storey block to the left, and an irregularly fenestrated, recessed single-storey wing to the outer right. The north-west (rear) elevation displays an irregularly fenestrated 2-storey block with a single-storey wing projecting to the outer right. A single-storey range is adjoined to the left, with a part-glazed timber panelled door at the centre and a single window to the outer left.

Modern timber glazing is used throughout the house. The roofs are covered with grey slate, with stone-coped skews, scroll-bracketed skewputts, and replacement rainwater goods. Brick-built apex stacks are present, although the cans are predominantly missing. The interior was not inspected in 1998.

The garage has harl-pointed sandstone rubble and tooled sandstone dressings. The south-west (courtyard) elevation features a large, square-headed garage opening, offset to the left of centre, with small rooflights and a grey slate piended roof. The garage interior was not inspected in 1998.

Boundary walls enclosing the site to the front are constructed of sandstone rubble with arched coping. The rear boundary is similarly enclosed by a rubble wall.
