Description

Leaside is a house located on Main Street East End in Chirnside, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure that features a butcher's shop on the ground floor and residential accommodation on the first floor. There is a further two-storey wing at the rear and a single-storey, piended range set behind the main building. The exterior is finished with whitewashed harl and painted dressings, featuring a raised band course that divides the floors, narrow quoin strips, raised margins, and projecting cills.

On the south elevation, there is a part-glazed timber door at the centre of the ground floor, topped by a plate glass fanlight, with a single window directly above it. To the left, there is a shop window in the ground floor bay, and a single window on the first floor. The right bay contains single windows on both floors. A single-storey addition is recessed to the outer right, featuring a single window to the left and a heavily chamfered angle to the right.

The east side elevation has a blank gable-end to the left, with a two-storey block to the right that includes a door at the centre of the ground floor and a single window above it. There is also a single window in the ground floor bay to the right, and a projecting single-storey addition at the outer right.

The north rear elevation features a single-storey range running east-west, with a two-leaf boarded timber door offset to the left, breaking the eaves. The remainder of this elevation was not visible in 1998, but a taller block is set behind it.

On the west side elevation, there is a blank gable-end to the right, with a two-storey block to the left that has a small-paned window at the ground floor to the right and a door to the left. There is also a single window aligned above on the first floor and a small-paned window in the single-storey addition to the outer left.

The windows throughout the building include plate glass and four-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, with some fixed-pane and modern windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring stone-coped skews and moulded skewputts, along with corniced, brick-built apex stacks topped with octagonal cans. The single-storey range at the rear has a corrugated-iron roof.

Inside the butcher's shop, the walls are tiled with continuous decorative banding at both lower and upper levels, showcasing key patterns and floral motifs. There is a marble counter and a modern ceiling, while the remainder of the interior was not seen in 1998.
