Description
Field House is a late 18th century house that was reworked in the later 19th century and has had additional alterations. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay structure with a projecting single storey and attic, and an L-plan formed by a rectangular-plan ancillary wing attached to the side. The main house features coursed and whitewashed render with red sandstone ashlar dressings, a raised base course, and a lintel course beneath the eaves. The upper floor has sandstone quoins, stop-chamfered margins, and projecting cills.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a part-gazed timber panelled door offset to the left of centre, with a painted door surround and a single window aligned above it. There are single windows on both floors in the flanking bays, and the projecting ancillary wing is attached to the outer right. The northwest (rear) elevation was not visible in 1998.
The windows throughout the house feature 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slate and has sandstone ridging and stone-coped skews. There is a corniced apex stack on the northeast and a brick-built apex stack on the southwest, both with circular cans.
The interior was not seen in 1998. The ancillary wing is constructed of harl-pointed red sandstone rubble on the southeast and northeast sides, with heavily weathered rubble dressings and a whitewashed southwest side. It has raised margins and projecting cills. The southwest (entrance) elevation has a large boarded timber door in the outer left bay and a single window at the centre. The southeast (side/street) elevation is 2-bay, with single windows in both bays at ground level and a round-arched attic window centered above, which has a former pigeon ledge above it. The northeast (rear) elevation was also not visible in 1998. The interior of the ancillary wing was used as a workshop in 1998, featuring 12- and 16-pane glazing in timber sash and case and fixed windows, as well as a 9-pane round-arched window with a 3-pane upper section on the southeast side. The roof is similarly covered with grey slate and has stone-coped skews.
A low rubble boundary wall encloses the site at the front.
