Description
Maines Farm is a farmhouse dating to approximately 1879, with later additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, two-story and three-bay building designed in a classical style. A lower, two-story wing extends to the rear, creating an L-shaped plan, with a single-story addition set within the re-entrant angle, and a modern conservatory attached to one side.
The front of the farmhouse is constructed of coursed and tooled cream sandstone, while the sides and rear are of tooled rubble sandstone, with lightly droved ashlar dressings. The building features a raised base course, a raised string course separating the floors to the front, a raised cill course at the first floor level, and an overhanging, corniced eaves. Prominent quoins are present on the main block, along with raised margins around the windows. The windows have sandstone mullions and projecting cills, with the first-floor cills bracketed at the front.
The main entrance, on the southeast elevation, is marked by a pilastered doorpiece with a step leading to a timber panelled door and a round-arched fanlight with a keystoned surround, flanked by narrow side-lights with corbelled cills. A single window is positioned above the door. To the left, a corniced, canted window sits at ground level, with a single window above. Similarly, a corniced, bipartite window is on the right at ground level, with a corresponding window above.
The southwest elevation features a two-bay block to the right, partially obscured by a modern conservatory. Single windows are located in both bays at the first floor. A lower wing is connected to the left, stretching seven bays wide at ground level and five bays wide at the first floor, with a timber door in the penultimate bay from the left. The remaining bays are irregularly fenestrated across both floors.
The rear (northwest) elevation shows a gabled wing projecting to the right. The main block is recessed to the left with a single-story, three-bay addition projecting at ground level, featuring single windows in each bay. A single window is offset to the right at first floor.
The northeast elevation presents a two-bay block on the left with a single window at ground level in the outer bay and a single window at first floor in the bay to the right. A single window is in the single-story addition to the right, with a recessed first-floor window. A lower wing adjoins the outer right, extending six bays wide at ground level and three bays wide at the first floor, with timber panelled doors centrally and in the outer left bay. The remaining bays contain single windows at both floors.
The majority of windows are timber sash and case windows with six panes, with stained glass side-lights flanking the front door. Small rooflights are present. The roof is covered in grey slate, with stone-coped skews and moulded skewputts in places. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted. The chimney stacks have corniced sandstone detailing and various circular cans.
The interior features timber panelled doors, timber skirting boards, and plain plasterwork. An internal staircase includes timber treads, decorative iron uprights, iron newels, and a timber handrail. The remainder of the interior was not inspected in 1998. Rubble-coped, rubble boundary walls partially enclose the site.
