Description

Earlier to mid 19th century with later additions and alterations; 2 detached houses inserted within late 20th century. 4-sided, near rectangular-plan walled garden (approximately 4,000m?) set on sloping site, to NE of former Maines House. Tall, coped walls (swept in part) with harl-pointed sandstone rubble to outer elevations; droved quoins; droved long and short surrounds to openings. Harl-pointed sandstone rubble inner linings to SE and SW; red brick inner linings to NE and NW (whitewashed in part); curved corner to NW. Various square-headed and segmental-arched openings; spearheaded iron gate in segmental-arched opening to NE.

GREENHOUSES: symmetrical range of greenhouses adjoining inner elevation NW wall with polygonal-fronted block projecting at centre (surmounting cupola); flanking lean-to ranges with projecting, gabled blocks centred in each. Glazing predominantly missing; some decorative iron brattishing in place. INTERIORS: not seen 1998.

GATEPIERS AND GATES: steps accessing gateway centred in lower wall to SE with square-plan sandstone gatepiers, urn-shaped and tapering finials; 2-leaf iron gate. Balustered sundial (?) set in garden below.

POTTING SHED: later, brick-built, lean-to potting shed adjoining outer elevation NW wall.
