Description

The Walled Garden and Greenhouses at Whitchester date from the late 19th century and feature a near square-plan walled garden, approximately 1,600 square meters, located to the southwest of Whitchester House. The site is enclosed by an outer wall, which includes the northern wall of the walled garden.

The walled garden is surrounded by harl-pointed rubble walls with square coping, partially harled, and has red brick-faced inner linings on each side. There are breaks in the walls to the northeast and northwest. The main entrance is centered in the southeast wall and features a staircase with sandstone treads, squat balusters, sandstone handrails, and squat square-plan newels topped with corniced caps. The entrance is flanked by corniced square-plan gatepiers topped with ball finials, and there is a decorative wrought-iron gate with side panels and an overthrow.

The greenhouses consist of a rectangular-plan greenhouse attached to the outer elevation of the walled garden on the southwest side, which has a gabled bay advanced at the center with a decorative finial and ridge detailing. There is also a lean-to slate-roofed addition at the rear and a lean-to glazed section in the remaining bays to the right. Additionally, there is a lean-to greenhouse adjoining the outer wall to the northwest of the walled garden. Both greenhouses are missing some glazing. The interiors were not seen in 1997.

The outer wall is a continuous square-coped structure that incorporates the northern wall of the walled garden at its center, with additional stretches extending to the left and right for the outer garden. The outer right features a swept detail with flanking ball-finialled piers. There are channelled square-plan piers flanking the entrance to the right of the walled garden, topped with ball finial caps and leading to two-leaf timber gates.
