Description
Caldra is an earlier 19th-century farmhouse that has undergone later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay building with a rectangular plan and Tudor detailing, featuring a slightly advanced central section and a two-storey wing at the rear that forms an L-shape. There is a lean-to porch located in the re-entrant angle at the back. The exterior is constructed from harl-pointed sandstone and whinstone, with extensive pointing in parts, and has droved cream sandstone dressings. The building features droved quoins, raised margins, and projecting cills.
On the southwest (entrance) elevation, the gabled bay is advanced at the center, showcasing a timber panelled door at ground level, a 2-pane fanlight above it, and a bracketed ashlar pentice canopy. There is a single window aligned at the first floor and a small opening centered in the gablehead, which is topped with a ball finial. The outer left and right bays each have single windows at both floors that are recessed.
The southeast (side) elevation has the original block with single windows at both floors, offset to the right of center. The lean-to porch is recessed to the right, and there is a single window at the first floor in the two-storey wing, which is recessed to the outer right.
On the northeast (rear) elevation, the lean-to porch is centered at ground level, with a stair window aligned above it. The projecting wing to the outer right has single windows in two bays at the ground level.
The northwest (side) elevation features a gabled bay to the outer right and a two-storey wing to the outer left, which has single windows at both floors, offset to the right of center.
The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case, with 4- and 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and it has raised stone skews and moulded skewputts. Red brick stacks are located at the apex on the southeast and northwest sides, with various circular cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1997. Surrounding the property are dry rubble walls that enclose the garden.
