Description
Garden Cottage, located at 13 The Row in Longformacus, is an earlier 19th-century single-storey cottage with an attic, featuring three bays and forming the end of an irregular terrace. The exterior is constructed of harl-pointed rubble with droved cream sandstone dressings and has overhanging timber bracketed eaves. Sandstone quoins and sandstone surrounds frame the chamfered openings, which are painted at the rear, and there are projecting cills with timber mullions.
On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a boarded timber door centrally located at ground level, accompanied by a three-pane fanlight above. To the outer left, there is a bipartite window in a bay that is recessed. The gabled bay to the outer right is slightly advanced and features a tripartite window at ground level, with a single window centered in the gablehead above.
The northeast (side) elevation has a single window off-set to the right of center at ground level. The northwest (rear) elevation includes two bays with single windows at ground level to the left of center, and a box dormer in the outer left bay. There is a flat-roofed porch at ground level in the outer right bay, with a French window breaking the eaves above.
The front elevation has timber sash and case windows with lying-pane glazing, while the side and rear feature modern windows. A single rooflight is present on the front, and the roof is covered with grey slate, with replacement rainwater goods. A brick apex stack is located on the northwest side, along with a single circular can.
The interior was not seen in 1997. The front of the house is approached by a cobbled path that forms the end of a continuous stretch along the front of the terrace.
