Walled Garden, Longformacus House

The sundial and walled garden at Longformacus House date from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. The garden has a near rectangular plan and is tiered, set on a sloping site of approximately 5,000 square meters. It is enclosed by coped, stepped, and swept harl-pointed rubble walls, which feature crowstepped buttresses at irregular intervals on both the inner and outer elevations. A coped red brick wall divides the site horizontally into two sections, and there are boarded timber doors throughout.

An open corner pavilion is attached to the central brick wall and the eastern rubble wall, supported by columnar elements and topped with a flat roof. The greenhouse is a timber-framed structure located in the northern wall, built on a coursed sandstone base. It features a projecting polygonal bay at the center, with lean-to wings that are recessed to the outer left and right.

In the lower half of the garden, there is a sandstone sundial with an engraved balustered base, a square-plan table, and a metal gnomon in place. Another sandstone sundial is positioned in front of the greenhouse, featuring a circular base, an urn-shaped drum with embossed carving, a circular table, and a metal gnomon.

The garden also includes corniced square-plan sandstone piers that flank a central stair connecting the lower and upper sections. These piers are topped with sandstone urns and feature sandstone treads and plain iron railings. The main entry to the southeast consists of decorative two-leaf wrought-iron gates, with a sandstone urn positioned above the southern wall.
