Description
This is an earlier to mid-18th century dovecot situated within the grounds of Longformacus House, which dates from the same period. The dovecot has a circular plan with a conical roof topped by a conical-capped, boarded timber drum. It is constructed of harled red rubble sandstone, with parts of the stone exposed. It features overhanging timber eaves supported by brackets. A boarded timber door is located centrally in the north elevation, and the upper drum has arched pigeon openings above projecting timber ledges. The roofs are covered in grey slate in a fishscale pattern, and the upper cap is finished with a ball finial and an iron weather vane. The interior was not inspected in 1997. According to Robertson, the dovecot is 4 feet 7 inches high, 2 feet 10 inches wide, has a circumference of 56 feet, and a wall thickness of 26 inches. He also recorded 490 wooden nests inside. The dovecot is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857. It forms part of the Longformacus House estate, which also includes a walled garden and gate lodge, each listed separately.
