Description
The property comprises an 18th-century farmhouse with a predominantly 19th-century steading range, with later alterations to the farmhouse. The farmhouse is a two-story, three-bay structure facing east, with a single-story addition to the west. The steading range extends west and consists of two open cattle courts, byres, an implement shed, a threshing barn, a storage barn, and a wheel house (now without a wheel) on the west side of the threshing barn. A cart-shed with a granary above is located on the first floor.
The farmhouse is constructed from whinstone and rubble, with stugged and some droved ashlar dressings. Flush quoins and staggered margins define the window and door openings. Originally a single-story whinstone building, the south elevation features a later full-height gabled porch in the center, with a boarded door on the west return and a window facing south. A timber monopitch-roofed addition extends from the east return. Windows are present on each floor of the flanking bays. A later boarded door, with a brick margin, is located to the outer right of the addition. The north elevation has an irregular disposition of bays, with a window at ground and first floor in the center, ground floor windows in the outer bays (a blank window at first floor), a first-floor window between the center and left bay, and a window on the western addition. The east elevation has been harled.
A variety of windows are present, including timber four-pane and plate glass sash and case windows, and ten-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is slate, with modern rooflights on the south elevation of the addition and on the outer left of the north elevation. A 19th-century three-pane rooflight is located in the center of the south elevation. Modern vents are also present on the south elevation, with brick wallhead stacks defining the house. The interior was not inspected in 1995.
The steading range remains in use for its original purpose, although waterpower has been replaced with electric power. Two open cattle courts flank a projecting byre and implement shed in the center of the yard, each having two-leaf boarded gates, with cast-iron watering troughs projecting through the walls into the courts. The western cattle court has a rounded corner on the southwest, supporting a roof with a cast-iron column. The eastern cattle court has a squared corner and a timber post supporting the byre shed. A two-leaf boarded door leads to the implement shed in the center. The byres run east to west, with openings to the cattle courts; hay hecks are present in the eastern byre, while the western byre has concrete pens and low troughs. A north-south range on the west has a monopitch addition to the outer left, featuring timber feeding trays. The range is divided into two sections, with a higher ridge height to the north. A sliding boarded door opens to a store room in the left section. The right section contains a threshing machine on the first floor, with a gabled section to the north and a two-leaf boarded door at ground level (raised to the first floor to the north). A north-south range on the east has two sections, with a lower ridge height to the north. A board-blinded opening is located at first floor to the center of the south section. A door is present to the outer left of the north section. The east elevation of the north-south range on the east has timber lintels over two two-leaf timber doors to the cart-shed, with a window at first floor above each (leading to the granary). A boarded timber door is located to the outer right of the south section. The granary windows have a three-pane upper section with vents to the lower section. The steading range has a slate roof.
