Description

East Lodge at Whitchester is a two-storey single bay lodge house, likely designed by George Fortune and dated 1897, with significant alterations and additions made around 1920. The lodge features Scottish 17th century architectural details and is located next to a pedimented pedestrian gate and wrought-iron double drive gate. The exterior is finished in pebbledash with ashlar dressings, showcasing chamfered arrises and Tudor hoodmoulds above each window.

On the northeast elevation, there is a battered base course with a string course above it. The ground floor features a corbelled tripartite ashlar oriel window, while a bipartite window is located on the first floor above.

The southeast elevation consists of two bays, with a half-piended single storey addition on the left. This addition includes a bipartite transomed window at ground level and a plaque inscribed with "1897 AS IFL" to the right of the centre. There is a deep-set boarded door on the outer right of the addition, which has wrought-iron hinges and an 8-pane rectangular fanlight set within an ashlar doorpiece. The lintel above the door is carved with "Al My Hoip Is In Ye Lord." A bipartite window is present at both ground and first floor levels.

The southwest elevation also has two bays, featuring a modern partially glazed door at ground level in the left bay, which has a rectangular fanlight above it and a modern lean-to conservatory. Above this door, there is a bipartite window on the first floor. In the right bay, a large bipartite transomed window at ground level overlaps with the single storey addition on the southeast.

The lodge is fitted with multi-pane timber sash and case windows and has a piended slate roof adorned with terracotta ridge tiles and exposed rafters. The southwest elevation includes a shouldered and coped wallhead stack, along with a ridge stack and rectangular-section downpipes.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1995.

The gate features a boarded pedestrian door set within a pedimented doorpiece, which has a roll-moulded surround and heraldic insignia carved in the tympanum on each elevation, topped with a fleur-de-lys finial. The principal gate is flanked by square-plan ashlar gatepiers that have a base course, panels, cavetto cornices, and bell-cast ashlar caps crowned with ashlar pineapples. The fine two-leaf wrought-iron gates are marked with "SL 1897" in gilt near the top.

To the northwest of the lodge are simple kennels, consisting of a two-kennel structure with a gabled end, featuring two doors and two closely-grouped windows at the centre, along with scalloped bargeboarding.
