Description

This is a late 18th to early 19th century house, potentially designed by George Fortune of Duns. It was raised to include an attic and altered in 1899. The building is a symmetrical single-story house with an attic, comprising three bays, with a bowed stair tower positioned centrally at the rear. To the left is a single-story, four-bay ancillary structure, originally a hen house, byre, and stable, and beyond that a single-story, two-bay wing that served as a smithy.

The main house is constructed of harl-pointed rubble sandstone, with some rendered pointing at the upper floor. It has droved and stugged sandstone dressings, with a harled elevation to the east. Rubble quoins are visible at ground level, and there are sandstone margins and tooled long and short sandstone surrounds to the stair opening. The bipartites have sandstone mullions and projecting cills. The adjoining ancillary structure and smithy are also of harl-pointed rubble.

The south (entrance) elevation of the house features a timber-panelled door at the centre, above which is a sandstone panel embossed with "A.S I.F.L 1899." Bipartite windows are situated in the flanking bays at ground level, with gabled bipartite windows breaking the eaves above. The north (rear) elevation displays a large window within the bowed stair tower, and slightly recessed lean-to projections in the flanking bays, each with a single window. The east (side) elevation has a single window at the upper stage, offset to the right of centre. The windows are a mixture of timber sash and case frames, originally with four panes above and plate glass below, although the glazing is now missing, with small rooflights present.

The roof is covered in graded grey slate, with timber bargeboards. Brick-built apex stacks originally had cans, but these are now missing. The interior of the house was not inspected in 1997.

The south (entrance) elevation of the ancillary structure and smithy presents a four-bay block with a single window opening in the bay furthest to the left, and boarded timber doors in the remaining bays to the right. The adjoining smithy features a small window opening, with a timber lintel, in the bay to the right, and a door opening in the bay to the outer left. The north (rear) elevation of the ancillary structure has a large opening offset to the left of centre, while the smithy has a large opening centred to the outer right. Glazing is missing throughout these structures. The roofs are grey slate, with some areas missing, and include stone skews and some cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside the ancillary structure, there are concrete stalls within the byre. No remains of the original forge are present.
