Walled Garden, Hutton Castle

The Walled Garden at Hutton Castle dates from the later to late 19th century and features a rectangular plan covering approximately 6,000 square meters. The garden is enclosed by tall, coped, squared, and tooled pink sandstone rubble walls, which are heavily pointed in parts, on the northwest, northeast, and southwest sides. There is a low, coped rubble wall on the southeast side. The walls have ashlar quoins and long and short surrounds around the openings, with a red brick inner lining on the northwest.

A depressed-arched entrance is located in the center of the northwest wall, featuring a two-leaf decorative wrought-iron gate. There are round-arched entrances on the northeast and southwest sides, each with decorative wrought-iron gates. Adjoining the outer elevation of the northwest wall is a lean-to potting shed made of red brick, while the inner elevation has the remains of lean-to greenhouses flanking the central entrance.

The southeast side is enclosed by a low wall topped with plain iron railings, with square-plan, pyramidal-capped ashlar piers flanking the central opening and marking the ends of the wall. Additionally, there are separate brick-built gatepiers on the southeast side that support another two-leaf decorative wrought-iron gate.
