Description
West Lodge, Hutton Castle, dates to circa 1876. It is an asymmetrical, two-storey, three-bay gate lodge, near a T-plan, with a substantial crowstepped design and a front verandah, accompanied by a single-storey wing at the rear. The front is constructed of coursed and droved pink sandstone, while the sides and rear are of squared and snecked, tooled pink sandstone, all with ashlar dressings. Features include a base course, moulded eaves course, rusticated quoins, and long and short surrounds to stop-chamfered openings. Sandstone mullions are present, along with projecting cills.
The south-east (entrance) elevation is near-symmetrical. A projecting crowstepped gable dominates the centre, featuring a four-light canted window at ground level, a bipartite window at the first floor, and a tooled, rectangular panel within the gablehead. A lean-to verandah is recessed to the left, leading to a timber-panelled door with a fanlight and a single window to its left. A crowstepped dormerhead breaks the eaves above the bipartite first floor window. A tripartite window is located at ground level in the recessed bay to the outer right, with another crowstepped dormerhead above a bipartite window.
The north-east (side) elevation features a projecting crowstepped gable with a four-light canted window at ground level, a bipartite window at the first floor, and a rectangular panel in the gablehead. The recessed bay to the left has a bipartite window at ground level, with a crowstepped dormerhead above. A single-storey wing is recessed to the outer right.
The north-west (rear) elevation has a centrally placed timber door at ground level. A single window is set off-centre to the left, with a crowstepped dormerhead breaking the eaves above. Squat windows are located at both floors, offset to the right, and a single-storey, crowstepped wing extends to the outer right.
The south-west (side) elevation displays a projecting crowstepped gable end with a four-light canted window at ground level, a bipartite window at the first floor, and a rectangular panel in the gablehead. A lean-to verandah adjoins the bay recessed to the right, with a crowstepped dormerhead above a bipartite window. A single-storey wing is recessed to the outer left.
Timber sash and case windows are found throughout, with nine-pane and twelve-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes. A rooflight is present on the front elevation. The roof is covered in grey slate, with terracotta ridging and crowstepped skews. Coped sandstone ridge and wallhead stacks rise above the building, topped with circular terracotta cans. The interior was not inspected in 1999. Plain iron railings partially enclose the site.
