Description
East Lodge at Hutton Castle is an early 20th century single-storey gate lodge designed in a cross-plan layout with crow-stepped gables and a timber verandah at the side. The front and sides are constructed from squared and snecked bull-faced pink sandstone, while the rear features squared and snecked tooled sandstone, with ashlar dressings throughout. The building includes a base course and an eaves course, along with tooled quoins and long and short surrounds to stop-chamfered openings. The stop-chamfered sandstone mullions and projecting cills add to its architectural detail.
On the entrance elevation, there is a gabled projection at the center with a bipartite window at ground level and an arrow-slit window in the gablehead, topped with a thistle-shaped finial. To the left, a timber panelled door is set back in a bay, accompanied by a 2-pane fanlight above. There is a square-headed niche to the outer left and a 2-bay timber verandah at the front. A bipartite window is located in the bay to the outer right.
The north side elevation mirrors the entrance with a central gabled projection featuring a bipartite window at ground level and an arrow-slit in the gablehead, with single windows in the bays to the outer left and right.
The west rear elevation has a central gabled projection with a single window at ground level and an arrow-slit in the gablehead, while the outer bays are blank.
On the south side elevation, there is again a gabled projection at the center with a bipartite window at ground level and an arrow-slit in the gablehead. A single window is found in the bay to the outer right, with a timber verandah projecting to the front. A part-glazed timber panelled door is set back in a bay to the outer left, also with a 2-pane fanlight above.
The lodge features 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with terracotta ridge tiling, and a central red-brick ridge stack with circular cans. The interior was not seen in 1999.
