Description

West Lodge at Bughtrig is a later 20th-century gate lodge that has undergone some alterations. It is a single-storey, three-bay structure designed in a classical style, featuring an attic addition at the rear. The exterior is harled with sandstone ashlar dressings, including sandstone mutuled and corniced eaves, narrow quoin strips, sandstone margins, and flush cills.

On the northeast entrance elevation, there is a deep-set timber panelled door in the center at ground level, topped by a plate glass fanlight and surrounded by an architraved frame. Flanking the door are Venetian windows with raised keystones above the central openings.

The southeast side elevation features a bipartite window in the center at ground level, with a single window to the left. The southwest rear elevation has a timber door offset to the right of center, also with a plate glass fanlight. There are single windows in the flanking bays, a narrow window to the outer right, and a bipartite window in the outer left bay. Additionally, there are two tripartite windows centered in a large pitched and platform dormer.

The northwest side elevation has a single window centered at ground level. The windows throughout the lodge include 3-, 8-, and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, with radial uppers on the Venetian openings, and small-pane timber casements in the attic. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, featuring a corniced central ridge stack with four flues and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The entrance is flanked by low coped, coursed, and stugged sandstone walls. There are squat, square-plan piers on the outer left and right, topped with pyramidal caps. The entrance is further defined by corniced square-plan gatepiers that have panelled facets, carved consoles, and ball-finialled caps, along with modern gates.
