Bughtrig Cottage, Main Street, Leitholm

Bughtrig Cottage is a picturesque estate cottage dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with a later addition. It is a single storey building with an attic and features three bays. Originally a school, it has a gabled porch at the front and a single storey, part-glazed addition at the rear. The exterior is constructed of harl-pointed rubble whinstone with droved cream sandstone dressings. It has overhanging timber bracketed eaves, droved quoins, and droved long and short surrounds to the openings, with projecting cills that are painted at the front. The porch gablehead is finished with boarded timber cladding.

On the southeast (entrance) elevation, there is a boarded timber door that is off-set to the right of centre, accompanied by a 2-pane fanlight. The gabled porch features paired timber columns, overhanging bracketed eaves, and a tapering, ball-capped finial. There are single windows at ground level in the outer left and right bays, with gabled dormers aligned above them.

The northeast (side) elevation has a single window at ground level, off-set to the right of centre, and the single storey addition is recessed to the outer right.

The cottage predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate roof with brick apex stacks that have paired flues, and a single circular can on the southwest side. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron. The interior was not seen in 1998.
