Description

Wood Cottage in Bughtrig is an earlier to mid 19th century cottage with significant later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring a three-bay rectangular plan and a full-width single-storey addition at the rear. The exterior is finished with whitewashed harl and painted dressings, and it has a rubble sandstone base course. The eaves are overhanging and supported by timber brackets, with timber bargeboards and projecting cills throughout. There is also a single-storey ancillary structure to the northeast.

The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a boarded timber door in the center, flanked by single windows, and features a three-pane fanlight above. The northwest side elevation includes a gabled block with a single window on the left side and an attic window centered in the apex. To the outer left, there is a single-storey wing with a single window offset to the right. The northeast rear elevation showcases the full-width single-storey projection with a timber panelled door at the center, a two-pane fanlight, and a single window in the bay to the right. The southeast side elevation has a gabled block with single windows centered on both floors and a single-storey wing to the right with a round-arched window offset to the right.

The windows throughout the cottage feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, with crossed astragals on the round-arched upper windows and 6-pane timber casements in the dormer. The rear addition has modern glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate, and there are iron rainwater goods, along with a coped stack and a circular can at the rear.

The interior was not accessible for inspection in 1998.

The ancillary structure, dating from the earlier 19th century, is made of squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone with droved sandstone dressings. The southwest entrance elevation features a two-leaf boarded timber garage door offset to the left of center and a boarded timber door in the outer right bay. The southeast side elevation has a boarded timber door offset to the right of center. This structure also has a grey slate piended roof.

The interior of the ancillary structure was not seen in 1998.
