Description

The greenhouse in the walled garden at Maines House dates from the earlier to mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. In the late 20th century, two detached houses were added within the garden. The walled garden is approximately 4,000 square meters and is set on a sloping site to the northeast of the former Maines House. It features tall, coped walls that are partly swept, constructed of harl-pointed sandstone rubble on the outer elevations, with droved quoins and droved long and short surrounds around the openings. The inner linings on the southeast and southwest are also made of harl-pointed sandstone rubble, while the northeast and northwest have red brick inner linings, which are partly whitewashed. The northwest corner is curved. The garden includes various square-headed and segmental-arched openings, with a spearheaded iron gate in a segmental-arched opening on the northeast side.

Adjoining the inner elevation of the northwest wall is a symmetrical range of greenhouses, which features a polygonal-fronted block that projects at the center and is topped with a cupola. There are flanking lean-to ranges with projecting gabled blocks centered in each. Most of the glazing is missing, although some decorative iron brattishing remains. The interiors were not seen in 1998.

Access to the garden is provided by steps leading to a gateway centered in the lower wall to the southeast, which has square-plan sandstone gatepiers topped with urn-shaped and tapering finials, and a two-leaf iron gate. A balustered sundial is set in the garden below.

Additionally, there is a later brick-built lean-to potting shed attached to the outer elevation of the northwest wall.
