Description
The stables at Whitehall, dated 1896, may include parts of an earlier structure and have seen later additions and alterations. This single-storey stable block has a rectangular plan with six bays and single-storey additions at the rear. The front is constructed of squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone, while the sides and rear are made of harl-pointed rubble, featuring sandstone ashlar dressings and brick-built rear additions. The building has prominent quoins, long and short surrounds to openings, and projecting cills.
On the south elevation, the entrance is located in the penultimate bay on the outer right, featuring a large, segmental-arched opening that breaks the eaves at ground level, with a central keystone dated '1896'. Above this, there is a gablehead with a clock at the centre, decorative timber bargeboards, a polygonal ridge vent with timber louvres, and a tapering finial. There are single windows in the flanking bays at ground level. To the outer left, there is a boarded timber door in the penultimate bay, accompanied by a 2-pane fanlight and a single window to the right, with a stepped mounting block set between. A single window is also present in the bay to the outer left.
The east side elevation features a blind elevation to the original block on the left, with single windows in the recessed brick-built addition to the right. The north rear elevation has projecting brick-built additions and a single window in the original block, recessed to the outer left.
The building predominantly features 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, along with small rooflights. The roofs are covered with grey slate and have a piended design, with a central ridge ventilator and a brick-built stack with a single can.
Inside, the stables have a finely appointed interior that includes a boarded timber tack-room, a stove, a plain fire-surround, and timber panelled doors. The walls are whitewashed, and there is boarded timber dado panelling. The stalls are divided by boarded timber partitions with iron railings and ball finials, and there are part-railed boarded timber doors and iron hay racks. The flooring features replacement cobbles, and the main block has a boarded timber combed ceiling with timber trusses, while the passage has a flat boarded ceiling.
