Description
The Waterloo Arms Hotel in Chirnside is an earlier 19th-century building with later additions and alterations. It features a two-storey, L-plan layout situated on a corner site, consisting of a pair of three-bay blocks to the west, with the taller block on the right and a two-bay section at the first floor to the left. There is a three-bay wing to the northeast, which has gabled upper windows that break the eaves, along with various single-storey and full-height additions at the rear. The west range is finished in whitewashed harl, while the northeast section is made of whitewashed rubble. Some painted cills project from the northeast range, and there are modern, non-traditional shutters that do not match the character of the building flanking all windows on the west side.
On the west (entrance) elevation of the west range, the right block has a three-bay layout with a timber panelled door in the center at ground level, and a single window directly above it. There are single windows in both flanking bays on each floor. The lower block to the left is adjoined and also has a timber panelled door centered at ground level, with single windows in the flanking bays on both floors.
The north (side) elevation features a gabled block on the right with a single window at the first floor, offset to the right of center. The three-bay wing to the left has single windows in all ground floor bays, with a former door at the center, and gabled windows that break the eaves above.
The east (rear) elevation is a blind elevation to the gabled block that projects to the outer right, with various single and two-storey additions adjoining the range, recessed to the left.
The south (side) elevation is also a blind elevation to the gabled block on the outer left, with a single-storey addition to the right and a two-storey range recessed to the outer right.
The building predominantly features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with some 4-pane glazing on the side. The roofs are covered in grey slate, with stone-coped skews and sandstone ridging. There are corniced, brick-built apex stacks with various circular cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 1998.
