Description

Braemar, located on Kirkgate in Chirnside, is a late 18th century house with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan structure featuring a flat-roofed porch at the center of the ground floor, a single-storey lean-to addition at the rear, and a single-storey wing with an attic that is adjoined to one side. The exterior is harled, with the front later painted, and it has painted render dressings. The building displays painted quoins with lined pointing, tabbed margins, and flush cills.

On the south elevation, the main block has a door and a single window in the projecting porch, with a window aligned above on the first floor. There are single windows in both floors of the flanking bays. To the left, a lower wing features a timber door at the center with a fanlight and flanking single windows. The outer left corner has a stop-chamfered angle.

The east elevation includes a gabled block to the left with single windows on both floors, offset to the left of center, and a single-storey lean-to addition that is recessed to the outer right.

On the north elevation, the two-storey block to the left has a single window on the first floor, offset to the right of center, and there is a single window in the lean-to addition to the outer right. The lower range to the right has a small single window offset to the left of center.

The west elevation features a projecting gabled wing with a small attic light centered in the apex and a two-storey block set behind it. The flat-roofed porch is recessed to the outer right, while the lean-to addition is recessed to the outer left.

The windows predominantly have four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style. The two-storey block has a grey slate roof with sandstone ridging, stone-coped skews, and harled apex stacks with octagonal and circular cans. The lower wing has a modern pantiled roof with rooflights, stone-coped skews, a squat apex stack to the west, and a single circular can. Some cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

The interior was not seen in 1998.
