Description

The Dovecot at Whitehall is likely from the 18th century and features a rectangular plan with two chambers, positioned to the northwest of Whitehall House. The walls are approximately 3 feet thick, and each chamber measures around 13 feet 1 inch square. The structure is built from harl-pointed sandstone rubble with tooled rubble dressings and red sandstone lintels. It has a projecting rat course or alighting ledge, rubble quoins, and rubble surrounds for the doorways.

On the south elevation, there are two square-headed doorways on either side of the center, featuring iron hinges, although the gates or doors are missing. Above these doorways is a continuous rat course or alighting ledge. The roof pitch above each chamber contains two tiers of flight holes, with 15 lower and 9 upper openings on the east side, and 16 lower and 10 upper openings on the west side.

The west, north, and east elevations have a continuous rat course or alighting ledge that divides the blank elevation. The roof is a grey slate mono-pitch, which is partially missing, and features stone-coped skews with beak skewputts that have carved human faces. The structure includes iron rainwater goods and bracketed water trays.

Inside, each chamber is lined with sandstone nesting boxes, with 876 in the east chamber and 870 in the west chamber. Timber poles are partially present in the west chamber but are missing in the east chamber.
