Jesmond Cottage, Crosshill, Chirnside

The boundary wall of Jesmond Cottage in Chirnside dates from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey, 7-bay cottage that features a later single-storey, 3-bay wing at the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The exterior is finished with whitewashed harl and painted render dressings, complemented by narrow quoin strips, raised margins (some shouldered and keystoned at the front), and projecting cills throughout.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a step leading up to a boarded timber door located centrally at ground level. This door includes a glazed circular panel and a 2-pane letterbox fanlight above, framed by a surround featuring a circular motif in the lintel. There are single windows in the flanking bays at ground level, with larger single windows in the outer left and right bays, which are keystoned. Above these, bipartite box dormers are aligned. To the outer right, there is a square-headed doorway that is recessed, providing access to a rubble-walled courtyard at the rear.

On the west elevation, there is a gabled block to the right, which has a small attic light offset to the right of centre, and a single window in the bay to the left. The adjoining 3-bay wing to the left features a centrally located boarded timber door with a 2-pane fanlight, along with single windows in the flanking bays.

The north elevation was not visible in 1998. The windows throughout predominantly feature 4-pane upper and 2-pane lower glazing in timber sash and case styles, with some 8-pane sash and case glazing. There are also fixed windows with hopper-panes on the side and a small rooflight. The roofs are covered with grey slate and have red tile ridging, with stone-coped skews and scrolled skewputts on the main block, along with apex stacks and various circular cans.

The boundary walls and gatepiers consist of rubble-coped, rubble walls that partially enclose the site. Square-plan rubble gatepiers flank the pedestrian entrance, which is fitted with a timber gate.
