Description
Blackadder Bank is a two-storey, three-bay gabled house dating to 1864, with later additions and alterations. It is built in a domestic Jacobean style. The exterior is constructed of stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings; roughly stugged squared and snecked sandstone with polished raised margins and quoins to the west elevation; squared and snecked roughly stugged sandstone with droved ashlar dressings to the north elevation; and sandstone rubble for an outbuilding. Raised long and short quoins are present.
The south elevation features an advanced central bay with stop-chamfered arrises at ground level. A deep-set panelled door with glazed upper panels and a plate glass rectangular fanlight is set within. The first floor of this bay is jettied, with a bipartite window to the centre, gabled and breaking the eaves, and a square datestone to the gablehead. Tripartite windows, with narrower flanking lights, are at ground level in the flanking bays, paired with windows at first floor, also breaking the eaves with gabled dormerheads.
The west elevation shows a window to each floor of the bay to the left, with a gabled dormerhead breaking the eaves at the first floor and a blinded round-arched arrowslit to the gablehead. An advanced gabled bay to the right also has a window to each floor. A narrow window is located to the left of this bay.
The east elevation is three-bay, with a modern glazed door at ground level to the centre and a first-floor window above. A gabled bay to the left is advanced and features a window to each floor. The bay to the right has bipartite windows to each floor, breaking the eaves with a gabled dormerhead, mirroring the design on the west elevation.
The north elevation is M-gabled, including a single-storey lean-to addition to the right of centre, and a further outbuilding to the north of the bay to the left. A modern cement-rendered lean-to is present at the northwest re-entrant angle. A boarded door with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above is centrally located at ground level.
The windows are timber sash and case with four panes and plate glass. The roof is ornamented with slating, featuring bands of fishscale slates, and a piended roof to the outbuilding. A corrugated modern roof covers the lean-to to the north. Ashlar coped skews have bracketed skewputts. Ashlar ball finials adorn each gable, with additional ornamentation on those to the south elevation. Two rendered three-flue coped stacks flank the centre, set back from the south elevation. Two-flue rendered apex coped stacks are present to each bay on the north elevation.
The interior was not inspected during a 1996 survey.
Sandstone rubble boundary walls with coping run along the northwest and northeast boundaries. Cast-iron gatepiers and an iron vehicular gate are located south of the house.
